Joanne's Fitness Studio, located in Newtown, CT (directions), offers supervised, small (6-8 participants) weight training classes, cardio workouts, and yoga classes. We're not a "gym" offering solitary workouts at any hour. We're a fitness studio dedicated to helping you increase your level of strength and fitness at a comfortable, supervised pace.

Led by longtime Newtown resident Joanne Lockwood, the philosopy of the Studio is simple - provide state of the art equipment,design personal exercise programs for each participant, keep class sizes small, and supervise each training and fitness session with a friendly staff to make sure you're getting the best out of every workout!

Program Overview

Optimal Fitness is a combination of aerobic conditioning (cardio exercises) and maintaining and improving muscle strength (weight or resistance training).  That's why we have state of the art equipment devoted to both cardio and strength training. We've found most people can do cardio unsupervised - but need help with and supervision with weight training. So our twice weekly classes focus on weight training - but you may stop by the Studio at any time during our normal hours and do cardio...

We also offer cardio circuit training classes and private personal training sessions. (more info)

If you are planning on having surgery or are currently in a formal physical therapy program, we will also work with you to continue to improve your strength and mobility. (more info)


Our small class size encourages people to share stories, swap tips and techniques, solve the world's problems, and tell jokes and tall tales... You'll find the Studio to be very friendly for newcomers, and you'll soon be making friends with your workout partners. We don't just work out at the Studio - we also offer other activities, get together for social events, and even swap recipes. We don't "live to work-out" - we work-out to live well!.
